The Purpose Behind Flight Path 2030

Red Wing Public Schools (RWPS) has launched a five-year plan to ensure every graduate is digitally fluent, ethically grounded, and future-ready. In today’s world, using data and artificial intelligence responsibly is as essential as reading and math, so we’re aligning classrooms, counseling, and partnerships accordingly.

This work is anchored in the RWPS Portrait of a Graduate — our North Star for developing critical thinkers, effective communicators, resilient learners, community-connected citizens, and technologically literate innovators. Flight Path 2030 is not a standalone program — it is the blueprint for living out our Portrait of a Graduate. Each year builds toward producing curious, resilient, ethical, and AI-ready innovators who can thrive in college, career, and civic life.

Flight Path 2030 advances AI Integrated Computing Education (AICE) across RWPS so every student encounters age-appropriate computing, data, and AI experiences in core classes, while students who want more can choose an advanced, credit-bearing AICE Flight Path that connects coursework to real projects, mentoring, and postsecondary options.

Our 2030 Vision

By 2030, every RWPS student and educator will be prepared to use new technologies in learning and life.

All students will experience projects using data and technology in their everyday classes.
Tech-focused students can pursue a rigorous AI Integrated Computing Education (AICE) Winger Flight Path with advanced courses, dual enrollment, and industry mentoring.
Staff will be supported by an AICE Hub that provides vetted tools, coaching, and a community of peer mentors.
The system will operate with clear policies, sustainable infrastructure, and aligned partnerships, embedding this work into the district’s long-term planning.

Five Year Overview

Year 1: Laying the Groundwork

The first year of Flight Path 2030 focused on building a strong foundation for the work ahead.

For students, this included early AI- and data-infused learning experiences, updated course and Flight Path guides, summer scholarship opportunities at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, participation in the national Aspirations in Computing community, and new course options for students in grades 7–12 beginning in the 2026–27 school year.

For staff, Year 1 included foundational professional learning in artificial intelligence, computer science, and data literacy; shared guidance for responsible AI use; and the launch of the AICE Hub to support collaboration, planning, and implementation across the district.

Across the district, the work included adopting RWPS’s first AI policy and administrative guidelines, launching the Flight Path 2030 website, aligning the initiative with district planning, reviewing technology infrastructure, hosting the first Flight Path 2030 Community Forum, beginning a dashboard to measure progress and impact over time, and building state and national partnerships that bring additional expertise and opportunities to RWPS.

Year 2: Spreading the Good Stuff

Building on the foundation established in Year 1, the second year will focus on making Flight Path 2030 more visible, understandable, and practical.

For students, Year 2 is focused on expanding opportunities to build computational thinking, data fluency, and responsible AI skills through everyday learning, while making deeper AICE courses, Winger Flight Paths, and college- and career-connected experiences easier to understand and navigate. There will be a wide variety of opportunities beyond the classroom through a new internship experience, the continuation of MSOE summer scholarships, the launch of the Mark Cuban Foundation High School AI Bootcamp, and the launch of MSOE post-secondary scholarships for graduating seniors. There will also be additional course options introduced with 2027-28 registration.

For staff, Year 2 will focus on moving from introductory learning to classroom implementation. RWPS will provide professional learning and coaching where needed, clarify expectations for computational thinking, data fluency, and responsible AI use, and support AICE Hub members in leading peer learning through professional learning communities and small learning teams. Counselors and school leaders will receive tools to support students and families.

Across the district, RWPS will improve the Flight Path 2030 website and family communications, strengthen partnerships, refine AI-tool approval and data-privacy processes, and continue using the dashboard and independent evaluation to measure access, participation, implementation, and student experiences over time. Planning is underway for the annual Community Forum to be held during the 2nd semester.

Year 3: Hands-On and Career-Connected

The third year moves more deeply into hands-on learning and career-connected experiences.

The plan includes new data analytics electives, an AI Lab, paid internships, micro-credentials, continued curriculum redesign, and family resources that explain how AI is used in learning and how student information is protected.

This is where more students should begin to see how computing, data, and artificial intelligence connect to real projects, real questions, and real possibilities after high school.

Year 4: Polishing & Showcasing

The fourth year focuses on strengthening expectations, expanding programming, and sharing student work with the broader community.

The plan includes expanded summer programming, clearer expectations for technology skills at each grade level, a regional showcase for student technology projects, and stronger partnerships with higher education and industry.

This year helps students show what they are learning and helps the community see how Flight Path 2030 is taking shape.

Year 5: Making It Stick

The fifth year focuses on sustainability.

By this point, the goal is for Flight Path 2030 to be part of how Red Wing Public Schools teaches, supports staff, plans courses, and prepares students for the future. The plan includes an official AICE Flight Path endorsement on transcripts, possible new graduation requirements, staff onboarding connected to AI and computing practices, and long-term sustainability through district budgets and partnerships.

The goal is not for Flight Path 2030 to remain a separate project forever. The goal is for this work to become permanently part of how students learn in Red Wing.

What Success Looks Like

By the end of Year 5, new AICE learning opportunities will be available to every student. In addition,

Students: The majority of graduates will have advanced technology experiences on their transcripts.
Educators & Counselors: Every educator will be trained and confident in supporting students towards meeting the goals outlined in the RWPS Portrait of a Graduate.
Systems: RWPS will operate with coherent policies, staffing, and tools to sustain innovation well beyond the grant.

Building Toward 2030

By 2030, Flight Path 2030 should not feel like a separate project. It should be part of how Red Wing Public Schools helps students prepare for what comes next.

For students, the goal is simple: more chances to build useful skills, explore new interests, and connect what they are learning in school to the world around them.
